Testing apps on different Android versions

I’m working on a small Android app with a friend, and we’ve run into a problem with testing it. Everything works fine on our own phones, but a few people using older versions of Android have reported crashes that we can’t reproduce. We don’t have the budget to buy several phones just to check how the app behaves on different devices. I’ve tried the emulator in Android Studio, but it feels pretty heavy on my laptop, especially when I’m switching between development and testing. I’m wondering whether there are lighter virtual Android environments that would let us install our app, try different system versions, and investigate these issues without needing a collection of physical devices. What are other developers using for this kind of testing?

Man, those bugs that only show up on somebody else’s old phone are the worst because you can stare at perfectly working code for hours and learn nothing. Before changing random parts of the app, get it running somewhere that can reproduce the same kind of device and OS combination. Try Firebase Test Lab for that. It can give you crash logs from different Android setups, so at least you’ll know what actually breaks before you start chasing guesses.

Your laptop is already doing the development work, so piling another heavy emulator on top of it isn’t doing you any favours. A separate virtual environment makes more sense when you only need to spin up another Android version, install the APK, check the problem and shut it down again. Before choosing one, read about the best virtual machine for Android here: https://gologin.com/blog/best-virtual-machine-for-android/ . Pay attention to which options let you pick the Android version and install your own APK without a load of extra setup. That should narrow the field down to the ones that are actually useful for testing.
